A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a scarlet wheel, the hub and eight radiating spokes surmounted by a white star with a scarlet disc at center and bearing four gold fleurs-de-lis around the felloe, all in front of an equilateral buff triangle and beneath a blue scroll divided in three folds, the ends terminating behind the corners of the triangle and inscribed SUPPORT FOR DEFENSE in gold letters.
Buff and scarlet are the colors used for Support. The wheel with white star and scarlet disc refers to the organizations aviation support capability during World War II. The scarlet color also alludes to the Meritorious Unit Commendation awarded for that service. The four fleurs-de-lis symbolize battle honors earned during World War II in France and Europe.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 21 August 1973.
